Why doctors say lifestyle might matter more than genetics for prediabetes

Experts are warning of a disease on the rise. The CDC estimates roughly 30 million Americans are living with diabetes.

What’s worse, according to experts, is the other 84 million diagnosed with pre-diabetes, or metabolic syndrome. It’s a cluster of conditions that increases risks for stroke, heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

The number of people diagnosed with the syndrome is expected to jump nearly 16% in the next decade. The state Department of Health says more than a third of New Jersey’s adults are prediabetic and don’t even know it.
