Unemployment rises as government worker furloughs begin

There’s a jump in the number of newly unemployed residents in New Jersey as many state workers went on furlough. The Labor Department says more than 47,000 residents applied for first-time jobless claims in the last week. That’s a 70% increase over the prior week.

In Jersey City Thursday, officials announced a new grant program for small businesses. Mayor Steve Fulop said now more than ever, businesses need help in order to survive as they have exhausted loans and other funding. Businesses with 25 employees or fewer, including home-based businesses, are eligible to apply for grants of up to $20,000 starting next week.

For quite some time leaders in South Jersey have said more flights to the Atlantic City Airport would boost tourism in the region. We’ll soon learn if that’s true. The charter airline company Global X will start flying some routes to Atlantic City beginning next summer. Flights will originate from Toronto and Montreal as well as some other U.S. cities.
