A private lab affiliated with Rutgers University is launching a new genetic testing service to detect the coronavirus. It’s speeding up traditional methods, like nasal swabs, by instead using saliva samples. It means tens of thousands of more residents can get tested — and self-quarantine — if they’re found positive. But it also means a medical provider doesn’t need to be present to do the test.
Senior Correspondent David Cruz reports the team has submitted their method for emergency use authorization to roll this as quickly as possible.
