Rep. Payne Says Republicans Are Holding Americans, Congress Hostage

While some Republicans have said Democrats shouldn’t just blame them and members of the Tea Party for the impending government shutdown, Congressman Donald Payne Jr. (D-10) told NJ Today Managing Editor Mike Schneider that he doesn’t agree. He said the Republicans and a small minority of their caucus are holding the American people and the Congress hostage by trying to get rid of the Affordable Care Act.

“It’s just irresponsible that the Republican leadership would bow to an extreme minority like that and you know they’re obsessed with defunding the Affordable Care Act. And it’s just unacceptable. It is the law of the land,” Payne said. “The Supreme Court has upheld it and tomorrow millions of Americans will be able to travel and navigate, look for quality health care.”

Some aspects of the Affordable Care Act have been delayed, but Payne said he believes legislators shouldn’t postpone its implementation any more.

“The Republicans have talked about delaying parts of it for a year, but this is the law of the land. We need to move forward,” he said. “There were problems with Medicaid and Medicare when it was initially brought up. There were problems with Social Security when it was initially brought up. Anything of this size is going to have its problems. But what we need to do is to work through those issues and make sure that millions of Americans can have quality health care.”
