Linares was the first Hispanic federal chief judge in New Jersey and the first Cuban-born federal chief judge in the United States. He plans to bring his focus on diversity to his new position as a partner at the firm McCarter and English.
With a judicial shortage in New Jersey’s federal court system — Linares’ departure will create a total six vacancies out of the 17 total posts.
Linares spoke about how he handles outside criticism on his sentencing decisions of high profile figures, like the former Port Authority Chairman David Samson.
