Proposal to Make High School Football Kickoffs Safer

The Medical Society of New Jersey recently approved a plan that would move high school kickoffs up 5 yards to the 45-yard line and start players in the three-point stance for kickoffs. NJToday’s Mike Schneider spoke with Dr. Vincent McInerney, an orthopedic surgeon and chairman of the society‚Äôs Committee on Medical Aspects of Sports. The Committee will recommend the plan to the NJ State Interscholastic Athletic Association before the 2012 football season. The committee also plans to approach state legislators with its proposal.

The proposal, says McInerney, has the support of parents, players and coaches including Rutgers football coach Greg Schiano. It was a year ago that Rutgers football player Eric LeGrand was left paralyzed from the neck down after a football collision.
