Panel hears testimony on sexual abuse at NJ women’s prison from former inmates

The workgroup addressing misogyny, harassment and sexual assault in New Jersey politics has moved their efforts online during the pandemic. Wednesday the group help their fourth public session. This time, with a slightly different focus: prison abuse.

Several former inmates from the Edna Mahan Women’s Correctional Facility shared emotional and disturbing stories of mental, physical and sexual abuse while incarcerated. The prison was the subject of a scathing Department of Justice report earlier this year that uncovered decades of mistreatment by staff.

Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg formed the group. Speaking with Senior Correspondent Briana Vannozzi, she says it’s one reasons the panel wanted to hear from those inside.
