In northwest NJ, thousands left out in the cold by season’s first winter storm

The first major storm of the winter season underperformed in South Jersey, dropping a light dusting of white, but lived up to its billing in North Jersey, dumping more than a foot of heavy, wet snow on trees and power lines.

Areas that may have looked like a winter wonderland were, in fact, rendered powerless and left to bear winter’s worst. One of such locations was Sparta Township, where officials opened three warming centers — the library, the town hall and the Knoll View Senior Center.

And by midday Tuesday, thousands of residents still struggled without power — and may not get it back until Thursday night.
