Federal grant for NJ Transit highlights agency’s shaky financial future

With help from a $17 million federal grant, NJ Transit is buying 25 factory-fresh articulated buses, equipped with wheelchair ramps, cell phone charging outlets and extra seating.

To win the grant, NJ Transit put up $4.3 million in matching local funds to win the federal grant, but lawmakers question whether NJ Transit’s shaky finances could hurt its ability to pony up matching funds for future capital projects.
