Congressman Rush Holt announced yesterday that he will not be seeking reelection in the 12th District and today, Assemblyman Uprendra Chivukula (D) announced that he will be running to fill the position. Chivukula told NJTV News Managing Editor Mike Schneider that he would bring a unique background to Congress.
“When you look at my district, District 17, which has three towns that overlap with Congressional District 12, and Holt’s background was a rocket scientist, mine is an electrical engineer, worked in the industry for more than 35 years and promoted innovation in the New Jersey sector. And I think that is one thing that gives me unique advantage,” said Chivukula.
Chivukula said that nothing is easy and you have to work for it and he thinks that is what the democratic system was made for. He said it’s important to focus on the middle class and small businesses to try to see how issues can be addressed.
The assemblyman said that he is progressive, which can be seen in his legislative record.
Being an immigrant from India, Chivukula said that he would also be bringing in an international perspective and he also brings a very unique background to the table.
Chivukula said that he is willing to reach across the aisle to work with the Republicans to get things done.
“The community would like to see me bring my credentials to Congress and see if I can bring any changes to Congress,” said Chivukula.
