Expected snowfall totals for Dec. 9

11:30 a.m. Update:

Snow is falling statewide, after struggling to overcome some low-level dry air earlier this morning. Convection over the Gulf Stream robbed the coastal plain of some of the moisture needed to saturate the atmosphere, but by 10 a.m., it was snowing nearly everywhere. The delayed onset will be mirrored by an accompanying delay in the end time of this minor winter storm, as I expect snowflakes to fly a couple hours later than I did at this time yesterday. Accumulating snow should linger past dark, perhaps continuing as late as 8 or 9 p.m. before tapering to scattered flurries.

The other change worth mentioning is that with a later departure, there will be more steady snow falling once the sun goes down. Consequently, roads could get snowed over and slippery for a time if you find yourself under one of the steadier bands of snow as the sun sets. In fact, as I write, one of these bands appears to be developing in eastern Mercer and western Middlesex Counties, likely putting down an inch an hour snowfall rates.

Otherwise, snowfall totals should land as expected, with the highest totals winding up somewhere between I95 and the Garden State Parkway, and higher amounts off paved surfaces. Stay safe and enjoy.
