Sen. Bob Menendez will be facing federal corruption charges for allegedly using his office to benefit Florida eye doctor and political donor Dr. Salomon Melgen, according to the Associated Press.
The report says a federal grand jury indicted Menendez on charges including conspiracy to commit bribery and wire fraud.
Menendez has maintained that he has done nothing wrong, saying, “I have always acted appropriately and legally,” while at an event last week.
Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo released a statement about the news: “I’ve had the opportunity to see first-hand the benefits of the work Bob Menendez has done on behalf of all New Jerseyans. Whether it was his work to pass legislation to help families or to provide funding to ease the strain on municipal and county budgets, he’s always fought for us. Sen. Menendez cares deeply about the people he represents and is a fierce advocate for them in Congress. Sen. Menendez, as all Americans are, is entitled to a presumption of innocence, and I am sure he welcomes the opportunity to clearly state his case. I look forward to the resolution of this matter so Sen. Menendez can continue his work on behalf of the citizens of Essex County and New Jersey.”
NJTV News will broadcast Menendez’s press conference, scheduled for 7 p.m. live on air and online.
NJTV News will have the latest tonight at 6, 7:30 and 11 p.m.
