Donald Trump got his first significant New Jersey endorsement today. Republican state Senator Michael Doherty (R – Warren County) says Trump is “making a lot of sense, especially on foreign policy.”
He told NJTV News that Trump’s attitude toward the Russians going into Syria accord with his own. “He [Trump] says, ‘Let Russia deal with ISIS,’and I think that’s right,” Doherty said.
Doherty also likes the fact that Trump wants to exert “some control over immigration. I think that lines up with most Americans’ attitudes,” and he agrees with Trump’s skepticism about “trade deals like NAFTA, CAFTA, and TPP.”
Asked if his Trump endorsement is a way of disrespecting Governor Chris Christie, with whom he has had some friction over the years, Doherty said, “I’m not a big fan of the governor, but my endorsement of Trump is really about foreign policy. While Christie is out there saber-rattling against Vladimir Putin, Trump is saying, let the Russians engage with ISIS. That makes so much more sense to me.”
