Paterson man who died after streaming video from police station may have had meningitis

The Paterson man whose death sparked protests and calls for an investigation by the attorney general may have had bacterial meningitis — an infection that can be fatal.

Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh said he and others who had contact with Jameek Lowery were given antibiotics out of an abundance of caution.

27-year-old Lowery died in a hospital two days after he recorded a frantic video at police headquarters.

Community members and the Lowery family expressed anger at what they say was mistreatment on the part of city police.

Officials are awaiting the results of an autopsy and a prosecutor’s investigation.
