The most recent incident involved a firebombing early Wednesday at Congregation Beth-El, in Rutherford. Someone had thrown at least one Molotov cocktail through the second floor window of the Orthodox synagogue while Rabbi Nossan Schuman, his wife and five children slept inside. The rabbi and his family escaped without injury.
It was the fourth incident involving a synagogue in Bergen County since Dec. 10.
At a press conference after the meeting, Rabbi Nosson Schuman of Congregation Beth-El was joined by elected officials, including Rep. Bill Pascrell, Sen. Frank Lautenberg, Bergen County Executive Kathleen Donovan, Rep. Steve Rothman, and Rep. Scott Garrett.
Rep. Steve Rothman (D-Fair Lawn) told The Record that most, if not all, of Bergen County’s police departments and the county sheriff’s office had committed to regular patrols outside synagogues across Bergen County.
NJToday‘s David Cruz was at the press conference, he’ll have more on this story on tonight’s newscast.
