NY, NJ senators look to fund Gateway Project without waiting on federal approval

President Donald Trump’s proposed 2020 budget contains no funding for the Gateway project and it slashes funding for the Northeast Corridor rail line.

U.S. senators from New York and New Jersey say they’re looking for ways to start the Portal Bridge replacement project without waiting for Trump administration sign off.

The states’ Democratic senators say they’re working on legislation that would enable states to advance the federal share for shovel-ready projects with a guarantee they would be reimbursed once the project gets final federal approval.

A plan under the Obama administration called for the states and federal government to split the cost 50-50. But Trump administration officials have denied that funding agreement.
