Matzo maker to shift operations to N.J., leaving historic N.Y. home

Aron Streit Inc., manufacturer of Streit’s Matzo, is under contract to sell its longtime Manhattan matzo factory on the Lower East Side and shift the operation to Moonachie, where the kosher food company already maintains a distribution center.

Aaron Gross, a fifth-generation member of the Streit family, told NJBIZ that the decision to sell the factory on Rivington Street, where the company has continuously made matzo since 1925, is the “most difficult thing we’ve ever decided to do.”

Gross said Streit’s Moonachie facility is poised to handle the closing factory’s matzo production until the company announces its long-term location plans sometime after Passover, which ends this year on April 11.
