The upcoming school year will be an exciting one for nearly 800 disadvantaged students from Essex County.
They went on a shopping spree at the 9th Annual “Back 2 School Store,” a one-day pop-up event conceptualized as a department store inside of B’Nai Shalom in West Orange. Students were paired with personal shoppers to make their selections of school supplies, winter wear and personal care items, all of which was purchased via donations.
Parents took advantage of services available include vision testing, blood pressure and sugar checks. Members of the Bloomfield Police Department were also on hand to fingerprint children.
Students were identified from 30 local social service agencies, including the New Community Corporation. Some of the recipients reside at New Community Harmony House, a transitional housing facility for homeless families.
The event was organized by the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) of Essex County with the help of 500 volunteers. If interested in volunteering with the group, visit https://ncjwessex.org/volunteer/.
