New Jersey’s Commissioner of Health, Shereef Elnahal, is leaving the Murphy administration.
Elnahal will become the new CEO of University Hospital in Newark. Elnahal, a physician, will join a facility that has been under scrutiny since three infants died there last year following a bacteria outbreak.
A state inspection report found inconsistent infection control practices at the facility, and the former hospital CEO resigned.
Following the announcement of his appointment Wednesday, Elnahal looked to the future, saying, “University can be the pride of Newark. Its health care, community and academic missions can carry it forward into excellence.”
He’s expected to begin his new role in July.
