Gateway Program surveys commuters on transportation priorities

The Trump administration might not be sold on the Gateway Project, but local commuters are.

A new survey released by the Gateway Program Development Corporation found that more than 70% of those polled want to see construction begin on a new Gateway Tunnel with about half of them saying “stop arguing and build it.” Moreover, 45% of respondents rated the Gateway Tunnel and Portal North Bridge Projects as the most important transportation priorities in the region, surpassing the next most popular priority by more than 15%.

Some other key findings include most people think rail is considered the most important mode of transportation in the region. And for those who take NJ Transit or Amtrak, well over half would switch to alternatives if one of the existing North River tubes was closed.

Most respondents believe it’s unlikely that a national infrastructure plan will be passed before the 2020 elections.
