The event was hosted at the Cougar’s Den on campus and attended by students, faculty and alumni. Food and drink were donated by Gourmet Dining and all proceeds for the even were contributed to the FoodBank.
“It’s a silent issue, not many people know that people can’t afford these things because people deserve to have food, the needs and the financial gains to get that,” said Rahil Ninche, assistant coordinator of the programming board for Kean’s Student Organization.
The event also featured a presentation from Michelle Jansen, director of school and community outreach at CFBNJ. She spoke about the roots of the organization and how it fights hunger in New Jersey.
“As a food bank, I think of us as a major distribution hub. We take in and distribute food to more than 1,000 partner agencies which include food pantries, church organizations, soup kitchens and schools,” said Jansen.
As of 2016, the national poverty threshold is at $24,000 for a family of four according to the United States Census Bureau.
“If you could imagine just living on that for just one person alone in New Jersey, it might not even cover your basic expenses and necessities,” said Jansen.
The event also accepted canned food donations, held raffles for prizes and had a photo station where attendees could capture the moment with Thanksgiving cut-outs.
