Counties push back against attorney general’s immigration policy

The deportation debate is boiling here at home as counties push back on the state’s top law enforcement office over immigration policies.

Sussex County has hired state GOP Chairman Doug Steinhardt’s law firm to defend a ballot question that would ask voters to decide whether the county sheriff should ignore Attorney General Gurbir Grewal’s Immigrant Trust Directive.

It limits the type of voluntary assistance state, county, and local law enforcement agencies can provide to ICE. Meanwhile one of the state’s most Republican counties is preparing to sue the Murphy administration over that same directive.

The Ocean County Board of Freeholders voted this week to authorize the preparation of a federal lawsuit questioning whether Grewal overstepped his legal authority by issuing the order.
