AAA campaign aims to curb distracted driving habits

AAA is launching a new campaign to get drivers to put down their phones while behind the wheel.

The campaign, called “Don’t Drive Intoxicated – Don’t Drive Intexticated” aims to make distracted driving as socially unacceptable as drunk driving.

Distracted driving was the cause of 196 fatal crashes in New Jersey in 2017, according to state police, making it the leading cause of traffic fatalities for the sixth year in a row.

The campaign encourages drivers to put their mobile devices out of sight, pull over to the side of the road to text and program navigation systems before starting the car.

AAA says pedestrians and cyclists should also keep off their devices while on sidewalks and roads.
