Dubbed a National Historic Landmark in 1976, timeless Cape May is not just another beach town. Named after a Dutch sea captain, Cornelius Jacobsen Mey, Cape May became known as a resort town in the 1800s. But by the beginning of the 20th century, the former boom town saw its fortunes turn when railroads and automobiles offered travelers greater options. The Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities is credited for resurgence of the beach town. Since the 1970s, the local nonprofit has been organizing trolley tours and house tours of Victorian homes. NJtoday’s Lauren Wanko explores the rich history of Cape May.
