Despite what the song says, they’re not wasting away again in Margaritaville. But job seekers are standing in long lines trying to get a job at the Jimmy Buffet backed restaurant and retail store which will open soon in Atlantic City. The job fair drew at least 600 people to the Atlantic City Convention Center on Monday. Since then, the numbers have decreased. But the job fair continues tomorrow. And the General Manager says there are still positions available.
“We’re looking for over 600 positions. About half have been filled,” said Margaritaville General Manager Miles Lederer. “We still need retail, servers, line cooks, prep cooks, especially servers.”
The high demand for these hourly jobs says a lot about the job market. Atlantic City’s 12 casinos, the economic engine of South Jersey, have been trimming hundreds of jobs in recent months. So any new job opportunity is welcome news to locals.
“I’ve been looking for a job for two years,” said Ardena Blake of Atlantic City. “It’s the economy.”
Margaritaville is expected to give a much needed boost to the local economy. It’s scheduled to open sometime next month.
