There have been several attempted abductions of children in Bergen and Passaic counties in recent weeks. The most recent incident happened Friday evening in Hawthorne in Passaic County. Police say a 13-year-old girl who wandered away from a crowded ball field was grabbed by an unidentified man.

“It’s a little brazen on someone’s part,” said Capt. Richard McAuliffe of the Hawthorne Police Department. “It’s the first time out of the other incidents in Bergen County that someone actually physically grabbed somebody … and attempted to lead her away forcibly.”

Similar incidents have been reported in Oradell, Hackensack, Ridgewood and Maywood over the past several weeks. On Oct. 6, Maywood police say an 8-year-old girl was approached by an unidentified man who asked her repeatedly to come see his “puppies.”

None of the targeted boys and girls were physically harmed. It’s not clear yet if there’s a connection between the various incidents. But authorities from each municipality are sharing information.

“Hackensack Police have a sketch and vehicle description … but it appears to be a different individual,” said Maywood Police Chief David Pegg.

Authorities are asking residents to be vigilant, keep a close watch on children and report anything suspicious.
