Leaders and members of Democracy for America, the Progressive Change Campaign Committee and the New Jersey Working Families Alliance held a press conference outside the Statehouse today, calling for all candidates in the New Jersey U.S. Senate race to declare support for the Social Security expansion and promise no cuts to Social Security.

The expansion is based off of a plan put forth by Sen. Tom Harkin of Iowa and Sen. Mark Begich of Alaska, which calls for no limit on income taxed for Social Security, and for cost of living increases to be based on inflation.

According to some new polls sponsored by the press conference organizers, voters in “red states” like Kentucky and Texas are in favor of Social Security expansion. Also, last week, more than 300,000 individuals — including 7,800 in New Jersey — have signed a petition urging Congress to expand the Social Security benefits.

Progressive Change Campaign Committee Co-Founder Adam Green announced his organization will be launching a series of ads urging all New Jersey U.S. Senate candidates to embrace expanding Social Security benefits.
