EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey’s two major toll roads had to pay more overtime to keep traffic moving in snowstorms.
Officials say it cost $8.4 million in overtime to plow snow and spread salt on the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway in 2013.
The total amount of overtime paid by the New Jersey Turnpike Authority was $14.4 million in 2013.
Authority spokesman Thomas Feeney tells the Asbury Park Press (http://on.app.com/1lNDyGS ) there aren’t enough employees in maintenance for the department to tackle a major storm. Feeney says employees in other departments are given the opportunity to work.
