ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — Hundreds of former employees of an Atlantic City casino that shut down early Monday are lined up in the hallway of a union office, hoping to get $20 supermarket gift cards and help filling out unemployment papers.
The workers lost their jobs when the Atlantic Club Casino Hotel closed down at 12:01 a.m. Some customers stayed until the final moments before tearful employees exchanged goodbyes.
The casino had been sold last month in a bankruptcy court auction to two competitors who will strip it for parts but have no desire to operate it.
The shutdown left 1,600 people out of work.
Atlantic City now has 11 casinos.
