ELIZABETH, N.J. (AP) — A longtime New Jersey law enforcement official has died.
Union County officials say county Sheriff Ralph Froehlich died at a hospital in Elizabeth on Sunday night. They told The Star-Ledger (http://bit.ly/1sFG7y1) that Froehlich had been battling cancer in recent months, but a cause of death was not immediately disclosed.
He was 83.
Froehlich started his law enforcement career in Elizabeth, where he was a police officer for nearly 20 years. He was first elected sheriff in 1977, and had been sworn into his 13th term in office in January.
Flags in Union County will be flown at half-staff in Froehlich’s memory.
