Sharif withdraws as Newark mayoral candidate

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — The field for Newark’s mayoral race has one fewer candidate.

Councilman Darrin Sharif announced Wednesday that he is withdrawing from the race. Sharif cited a lack of financial resources as his reason for dropping out and said he will instead seek re-election for a council seat in the Central Ward.

Sharif said the decision was a tough but a necessary one.

Sharif’s withdrawal leaves Councilman Ras Baraka and former state assistant attorney general Shavar Jeffries still in the race. Councilman Anibal Ramos dropped out of the race earlier Wednesday, according to published reports.

The winner will succeed Mayor Luis Quintana, who was elevated from the city council to replace Cory Booker when Booker stepped down to run for a U.S. Senate seat last year.
