School bus protest in Lakewood postponed

6-10-14

LAKEWOOD, N.J. (AP) — A planned protest which could clog a predominantly Orthodox Jewish community in New Jersey with hundreds of cars has been postponed for a day.

But a rabbi is still calling on the parents of private school students to drive their children to classes on Wednesday and Thursday to protest Lakewood’s decision to end a nearly $4 million courtesy busing program for an estimated 8,100 students in September.

Courtesy busing is provided as a convenience for students who live within 2½ miles of their schools. The buses are still rolling.

State. Sen. Robert Singer tell the Asbury Park Press (http://on.app.com/1kUBwVD ) he hopes private school leaders will call off the protest because creating a traffic jam is never good for anybody.
