TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey man has admitted his role in a scheme to force a Jewish man to grant his wife a religious divorce.
Federal prosecutors say 51-year-old David Wax of Lakewood pleaded guilty Tuesday in federal court to a complaint charging him with conspiracy to commit kidnapping.
Prosecutors say Wax was paid $100,000 by the victim’s wife.
In exchange, prosecutors say Wax and a group of conspirators lured the man from Brooklyn to Wax’s New Jersey home under false pretenses in October 2010. They then bound, blindfolded and assaulted the victim until he agreed to the divorce, called a “get.”
Wax faces up to life in prison when he’s sentenced Aug. 19.
