NJ gov: Mall suicide a wakeup call for lawmakers

MENDHAM TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie says a suicide inside a mall is another example of why more attention needs to be given to mental health issues.

He says the state Legislature failed to address the issue when it took up bills aimed at curbing violence. Christie made his remarks after voting Tuesday morning in his hometown of Mendham Township.

A 20-year-old gunman fired shots inside Garden State Plaza in Paramus on Monday evening but didn’t injure anyone. Police say he was found dead early Tuesday of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

It is not known whether gunman Richard Shoop had any mental health issues. Authorities say he had a drug problem.
