TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Some New Jersey lawmakers want to study whether casino gambling should be expanded to the Meadowlands sports complex in East Rutherford.
Assemblyman Ralph Caputo says the state needs to evaluate how well a package of reforms designed to help Atlantic City has been working.
But Assemblyman Vincent Mazzeo says the resort needs more time, adding the state should be focusing more on how to help it rather than considering undercutting it.
Their Assembly committee discussed a bill Thursday that would create a commission to study the issue but did not vote on it.
Casino gambling expansion proposals have been hotly opposed by southern New Jersey lawmakers. They fear it would destroy the already-struggling Atlantic City casino market.
