NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Newark’s first black mayor has been named to mayor-elect Ras Baraka’s transition team.
Kenneth Gibson will co-chair the transition team along with former PSE&G head Al Koeppe. Gibson was elected mayor in 1970 and served until 1986.
After he left office he was indicted on fraud and tax counts related to a school construction project. He eventually pleaded guilty to avoiding paying about $78,000 in income taxes and received three years’ probation.
Among the other transition team members announced on Friday was Caren Franzini, the former longtime head of the state’s Economic Development Authority. Franzini will be on Baraka’s economic development and housing team.
