FBI offers $$ for info on airport laser incidents

6-3-14

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — The FBI will offer cash for information on people who point lasers at aircraft.

The bureau said Tuesday it will give up to $10,000 over the next 90 days for information leading to an arrest.

Laser-pointing incidents have been a problem at airports around the country, though they have dropped recently as law enforcement and aviation officials have raised public awareness.

The FAA says there were 117 incidents at the four New York City-area airports last year. This year there were 33 through May 23.

Unfortunately, Newark Liberty Airport is on pace for an increase over last year.

In 2006, a Parsippany man received two years’ probation for pointing a laser at a plane landing at Teterboro Airport.

Lasers can temporarily prevent pilots from seeing flight instruments.
