CAPE MAY, N.J. (AP) — The Coast Guard has suspended its search off the New Jersey coast for a missing Long Island, N.Y., man whose sailboat was found adrift with no one aboard.
The family of 56-year-old Vincent Tangorra of Bethpage says he had been attempting to take the sailboat to North Carolina for the winter when he ran into engine trouble and had to turn back.
Ray Tangorra, also of Bethpage, tells The Press of Atlantic City (http://bit.ly/1iKRb93 ) his last contact with Vincent was Thursday night when he was near Cape May.
A personal watercraft Tangorra was towing was spotted adrift off the coast Friday, touching off a Coast Guard search. His empty 37-foot sailboat Polaris was later found nine miles offshore.
His brother is holding out hope the former New York City bus driver is still alive, maybe in a hospital somewhere.
