Thursday, April 10, at 7:30 p.m. in Patriots Theater at the War Memorial the Coast Guard Band, under the direction of Lieutenant Commander Adam Williamson, offers an engaging program with virtuosic soloists and dramatic works by Sousa, Weill, Bolcom, and Bernstein.
The concert opens with “Ready for the Call,” a fanfare based on “Semper Paratus” by Musician 1st Class Sean Nelson. Anthony Dilorenzo’s “Gemini” features Euphonium Soloist, Chief Musician Bonnie Denton and Horn Soloist, Musician 1st Class Bryce Nakaoka. William Bolcom’s stirring “Song for Band” is followed by Coast Guard Band Vocalist Musician 1st Class Megan Weikleenget as she performs three charming pieces by Kurt Weill, arranged for band by Musician 1st Class Robert Langslet. Assistant Director Chief Warrant Officer Richard E. Wyman leads a performance of Jeff Tyzik’s multi-movement work, “New York Cityscape.” Leonard Bernstein’s “Symphonic Dances from West Side Story” showcases the whole ensemble with powerful moments, both beautiful and groovy.
