GIANLUCA BIANCHINO – SPACETIME DISCONTINUUM
Friday, May 23 – Friday, June 27, 2014
Opening Reception: Friday, May23rd – 5pm to 10pm
Artist Talk: Saturday, June 7, 3pm

The Prospect Firestation Art Center is pleased to present “Spacetime Discontinuum” a site-specific installation by artist Gianluca Bianchino. Bianchino will envelop the entire space of the gallery with his sculptural environment that consists of both two and three dimensional forms to create a multi-media landscape. The forms are combined to establish an ambiguous space that alludes to questions of identity and similar existential concerns, moving the genre of landscape forward into new, allusionistic territory that refers not only to our surroundings on planet earth, but also physics and the universe. At the same time, Bianchino draws upon prior art movements such as Cubism, Surrealism and Constructivism which are similarly concerned with shape, space and form. The exhibition is curated by Hal Laessig of Sumei Multidisciplinary Arts Center.
Bianchino considers both materials and the literal space of the gallery to be an integral part of his work. Informed by his interest in cosmology and physics, he creates immersive environments through the tangible mediums of paper, wood and found objects, conflated with intangible elements such as light, shadow and projections. This creates an ambiguous space that invites viewers to consider their relationship to his work as well as their place within it. There will be an artist talk featuring Bianchino and Curator Hal Laessig on Saturday, June 27, at 3pm moderated by Jonathan Goodman, renowned art writer and regular contributor to Sculpture Magazine, The Brooklyn Rail and Art Critical. The talk is co-sponsored by Seton Hall University’s Walsh Gallery.
The Firestation Gallery is operated by Sumei Multidisciplinary Arts Center, established in 1993 by a collective of musicians, architects, poets, graphic designers, visual and fine artists interested in broadening their reach within the local Newark, New Jersey area and beyond. The Firestation Art Center is located at 56 Prospect Street, Newark, New Jersey, in the Ironbound District.
